Colour Names: The Big Table

For your webpages to display a certain color background, text or links, you may use either predefined colour names or hexadecimal values in your HTML code.

Color names are listed below, along with their red-green-blue (RGB) and hexadecimal values. Your browser may not display all named colours correctly, in which case there will be differences with the colors specified as hexadecimal. Provided your screen is capable of displaying at a sufficient colour-depth, the hexadecimal-specified colors should be taken as correct. Even so, Windows' colour accuracy isn't too good and there is variation between browsers of the actual colors displayed.

The colour names have been tested in "bog standard" Windows browsers (Explorer3 and Navigator3) as well as Opera3.6. Anomalies with these browsers are noted by use of E(xplorer), N(avigator) or O(pera) alongside the color name. The text colours have been chosen to display against whatever colors (black, red, green, white) may be erroneously displayed.

The pale named colours are handled best by Navigator, but where these display as white on a 256-color screen the problem is noted with a question-mark [?].

There are other webpages at this site which display a more restricted list of named colours which should be usable on most systems, with special attention paid to the Arachne browser for DOS. Arachne's support for named colors is poor, but it is far more accurate at displaying the hexadecimal-specified versions on a 256-colour display. This is certainly useful for test purposes, but for webpages to be viewable as intended by the maximum audience it is necessary to use a restricted palette.
Note: Both spellings of gray/grey are supposed to be permissible.
In order that this page should have some chance of appearing in search-engine results,
International and US spellings for "colour" have been alternated in the text.
